The legendary Black diamond “THE ENIGMA” • Sotheby's Auction

Dubai - February 3rd ; A legendary carbonado is going to be auctioned online by the famous Sotheby's auction House. Online offers are expected to reach several million euros. There are good reasons to think that this kind of diamond was not born in the Earth's mantle, at moderate pressures and temperatures, but in a much more exotic environment. It could come from Brazil or the Central African Republic, areas conducive to meteorite falls in another era. This diamond could presumably be much older than Earth. The Enigma is an exquisite and extremely rare carbonado type black diamond, weighing a staggering 555.55 carats. It far surpasses the weight of both the Great Star of Africa, 530.2 carats, and the Golden Jubilee, 545.67 carats, making it not only the largest fancy black natural colour diamond in the world, but also the largest cut diamond in the world. As for the shape of the diamond, it is based on the Middle Eastern symbol of the khamsa, "which represents strength and protection", according to the words of Sophie Stevens (Jewellery specialist at Sotheby's-Dubai). Khamsa, in Arabic, means five. Hence its 555.5 carats, but also its 55 sides… Everything that is rare is precious, and therefore expensive.
