In the first half of 2026, Sotheby's recorded $4.4 billion in total sales, its strongest first half in 282 years of existence, representing a +58% increase on the same period the previous year. Auction sales surged +59% to $3.4 billion, while private sales reached an all-time high of $826 million. In New York, the spring season closed with a sell-through rate approaching 92.5%. Virtually every lot sold.

As Charles Stewart, CEO of Sotheby's, put it plainly: "The wealth being created right now is the number one driver of our business."

The year, of course, was never just about "Gus." In Paris, the sixth and final session of the Karl Lagerfeld estate sale concluded at €731,008, with 100% of lots sold. Every single one.

In the realm of contemporary art, Banksy electrified the room with "Applause", hammered at £96,000, a new auction record for the work, which had previously traded between £20,000 and £30,000. And in the world of design, a set of fifteen Claude Lalanne mirrors reached $33.5 million, the highest price ever paid for a work of design at auction.

Fifty years on from its founding, the network now spans more than 1,100 offices across 86 countries, with $182.4 billion in sales volume recorded in 2025 alone, a +16% increase year on year.
